AI vs ART
My thoughts on the use of AI for art
AI and generative AI is pretty big news right now. There are many tools out there that can help you to produce content that is just enough for what you need. I use AI to help inspire new ideas, and to get those ideas out quickly and cheaply.
What about real artists?
My view is that real artists will become even more important in the future. AI will have a big impact on artists. In fact, it already is. A lot of this site is made from AI, and you could argue it has potentially taken business away from artists, but the reality is, it hasn't. As a small creator, I have found that I can get what I need through AI tools quickly and cheaply. If I had to pay hundreds of pounds to get the same outcome, then I probably wouldn't have bothered.
Where artists come in, is around building the relationship with the client, and showing the human side. This will never be replaced by AI. At least I hope it won't, else we're all doomed!
My point is this. AI is great for the hobbyist, or for people that need "just enough" art. If you want professional art and have the appetite and resources to cover it, then yeah, do that!
There is the issue of copyright though. Training AI with readily available images off the net is problematic for artists. Artists will need to take action to prevent access to their content so it cannot be scraped, and instead of watermark, the whole image may have to be heavily obfuscated.
Copyright has always been a problem, whether it be movies or music, but those industries have managed, not to stop it, but able to limit the impact. I am not sure it's as easy with art. Maybe one day it will be.
Comment below, especially if you're an artist impacted by AI.
