EP09 - Tunic for Rhi

As part of my ongoing series "I play the games, so you don't have to," I recently embarked on a new adventure in the indie game world, exploring the first two hours of "Tunic." This game, suggested by my friend Rhi, is a bit of a departure from my usual gaming fare, but it's been a delightful surprise in terms of fun and intrigue.

Initial Impressions

"Tunic" throws you into its world with minimal guidance, creating an air of mystery right from the start. The story, or the lack thereof, is immediately noticeable. You're a small fox in a big world, armed with nothing until you find a stick – yes, a stick – to defend yourself. Rhi and I were both intrigued by this simplistic yet challenging setup.

The Landscape

We didn't get far in Tunic, but the landscape we saw was serene and picturesque. It certainly  sets the tone for the game's enchanting world. You are presented with lush greenery and a tranquil setting. The palette is bright and welcoming, with an abundance of natural light that bathes the landscape in a warm, inviting glow. Small streams and ponds dot the area, adding a sense of peacefulness to the environment. The isometric view enhances these details, giving players a comprehensive look at the world's beauty and inviting exploration.

Combat

Early on, we encountered a variety of enemies that helped to introduce me to the game's combat mechanics. These initial foes were challenging yet manageable, helping me to learn and adapt to the game's combat system. Combat was similar to that in Death's Door, and was pretty intuitive. I used a controller

The Guard Captain

The game's first major hurdle is the formidable Guard Captain. Armed with nothing but a trusty stick, I made several attempts at taking down this daunting foe. After a few failed tries, we decided to explore the world a bit more, hoping to find a better weapon. This exploration phase is where Tunic truly shines, encouraging players to wander and discover its secrets.

The Sword

Our persistence paid off when we stumbled upon a sword. This find significantly changed my approach to combat, making the encounters with the Guard Captain less daunting, though still quite challenging. I must admit, I died a few more times, but the satisfaction of eventually triumphing over the boss was a true gamer's delight.

Final Thoughts

While "Tunic" might not top my list of games to continue playing, it's earned a spot. The game's charm lies in its simplicity and the sense of accomplishment that comes from unraveling its mysteries. It's a testament to the allure of indie games and their ability to offer unique experiences.

Special thanks

A special thanks to Rhi for suggesting Tunic. It's been a fun and interesting journey, one that I might not have embarked on without her recommendation. Stay tuned for more adventures in the world of gaming, where I dive into the unknown so you can enjoy the journey from afar!

Also, a massive thanks to Treecle for bringing her community over to my stream. It is much atreeciated!
