EP10 - Disco Elysium for RationalInsanity
In this episode of "I play the games, so you don't have to," I dive into
the complex world of "Disco Elysium." A special shoutout to
RationalInanity, a long-standing member of our community, for suggesting
this intriguing title. This game is a new adventure for me, straying
extremely far from my usual gaming preferences.
Initial Impressions
My first two hours with "Disco Elysium" were a mix of intrigue and unfamiliarity. It's a game brimming with depth and mystery. Despite its fascinating narrative, it's quite different from my typical game choices. However, the unique appeal of this game is undeniable.
The Landscape
You start in a room in a hostel. You wake up from what appears to be the aftermath of a drunken night before. You discover there has been a murder, and that's the central point of my initial game-play: Uncovering the murder scene.
I am not going to lie, the intricate details and the way the game unfolds the narrative are impressive. The visuals are very unique, and roaming the surrounding areas revealed a rich, detailed world with what looks like a lot to offer in terms of story and character development. A standout moment was the lengthy and engaging conversation with Measurehead. This interaction showcased the game's strong writing and character depth, but also made me realise the game was probably not for me.
Control Scheme
I was playing on the Playstation 5, and navigating the game's world was a challenge with the controls being a little awkward. However, once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier. It definitely suits keyboard and mouse.
Conclusion
Disco Elysium is a game that stands out for its narrative depth and character complexity. While it's not a genre I usually gravitate towards, I can appreciate its uniqueness and the immersive experience it offers. Is it a game I will revisit? Probably not. It's not my kind of game really.
Special Thanks
A massive thanks to RationalInanity for this game suggestion. Although I certainly won't be playing it further, he will be taking on the challenge, and that is exactly the point of this series! I play the games so you don't have to!
